National maritime museum - Amsterdam

Dear blog,

My favorite exhibit was the national maritime museum in Amsterdam. I especially enjoyed going aboard the historic East Indian company ship. We were able to see the living quarters of the captain, crew members, and soldiers. Our tour guide was a wealth of information and explained to us how powerful the Dutch rebublic was in the golden era and also how important the shipping company was to the country at that time. We learned the various meanings of the flags that were being flown on the ship, and also how the crew members would go about daily life while on the seas. It was interesting to see the immaculate detail and color put into the back of the ship, showing how successful the company was at that time. It's also crazy that they were able to fit 350 people aboard the ship, although having to spend 6-8 months at a time would no doubtebly get old after awhile. In conclusion, I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the maritime museum and I'm excited to see the tours we have planned for the future. Until next time!

  1. Jake, I too found the National Maritime very appealing. I didn't know that the decorations on the stern of the ships actually had so much meaning.

  3. Jake-- I also enjoyed the National Maritime Museum. I strongly agree with you that the ship must have been incredibly crowded. I can't imagine sharing a ship so small with so many other shipmates. I was suprised at how decorative the ships were at the time. I would have imagined them to focus on strength and simplicity, not bold colors and designs. However, when Sasha explained that it was a way of the Dutch East India Company to advertise their business, it was clear why their decorations were so intricate and impressive.

  4. I can't imagine how difficult living on a ship with 349 other people would be. However, I thought the mueseum's incorrperation of the ship really gave us and other visitors an idea of what such a voyage would be like.

  6. When she mentioned that only 1 of 3 men on the trip would make it back home and that they would by away from home for many years, I thought that that was very sad. Also, it sounded like tbe years were not great especially if you had no status or rank on the ship.

  7. I really enjoyed the Maritime museum too. The ship was a very cool part of the whole tour seeing what it was really like when the ship was originally built. The tour guide also made the tour much better with her excitement and obvious interest in the museum.
