German Bible at Biblioteca Thessiana

The bible at the Bibliotheca Thysiana is fascinating because it is a centuries old bible that was translated from Latin into a dialect of German well before Martin Luther would officially translate the bible into the vernacular. Also, the book's text is printed to look like a manuscript while the illustrations and formatting symbols are beautifully hand painted in a variety of colors. The binding and exterior of the book was also interesting, because of how the front and rear covers are made from oak, which is very rare. In addition, there are brass latches and feet fixed to both covers to protect the book from getting dirty or damaged. Thus, physically and metaphorically protecting the book from corruption.

  1. Hey Adam, I too enjoyed seeing the bible in the library. It was really cool that the book was basically bullet proof and also that there were super intricate pictures on the inside that were hand colored. I also liked that we were able to physically touch the books, which gave it a completely different perspective.

  2. The Bibliotheca Thysiana was a interesting tour. walking into the top floor of the library and seeing all of the century old books was neat, but then to be able to request to see and handle the books was something else. No other site I've ever been to allows anyone to touch anything. It was interesting learning about the different methods that went into the production of the various books.

  3. I also found the books at Thysiana intersting because of the process of making the books was so difficut. I just can't imagine sitting at a desk all day copying the same words all day without making a single mistake, and the art work in the bible expecially was very extravagant and delicate.

  4. I really liked looking at this bible. They way it was protected with the clasps, the hard covers, and the feet to stand on was very cool. It really neat that in this way, the bible is protected physically and metaphorically.

  5. I too loved looking at this Bible. The pages were awesome in that they felt old (unique texture) and some of the watercolor pictures were pretty hilarious. It also gave some insight into peoples interpretation of the Bible were given by how the pictures were made.
